Making Tax Digital is edging closer to Making Tax Difficult (as one of our clients named it!) — at least for now.
Yes, it’s boiling hot outside, and the compliance landscape feels just as warm. Our VAT‑registered sole trader clients are now navigating nine separate digital filings, which is no small task for busy businesses.
But here’s the optimistic truth: despite the current frustrations, MTD is progress. It’s pushing businesses toward systems that reduce errors, improve record‑keeping, and create a more reliable audit trail. Digital submissions mean fewer lost receipts, fewer manual mistakes, and fewer surprises at year‑end.
It also encourages clients to adopt better software, giving them real‑time visibility over cashflow, VAT liabilities, and performance — something paper records could never deliver. And while nine filings feel heavy today, the long‑term aim is a more integrated, automated tax system where data flows smoothly and compliance becomes less reactive and more routine.
As accountants, we see both sides: the current heat and the future benefits. Our role is to help clients stay compliant, stay confident, and stay cool through the transition. The heatwave will pass, and so will the teething problems of MTD. As accountants, we want our role to be proactive and, with improved information, we are better placed to plan forward rather than always looking over our shoulders!
Progress isn’t always comfortable, but it’s still progress.
